Springtime Home Maintenance Checklist

When the seasons change, we suggest taking the time to address some home maintenance items. The smartest homeowners know that taking care of your investment by keeping up with these seasonal habits are easy ways to get more longevity out of your home and its systems! Plus, when it's time to sell, you'll be less likely to encounter deferred maintenance requests from a buyer during the inspection. Here are our recommended items to tackle for Spring:

Clean windows and screens

It’s amazing how much of an impact clean windows have on a home’s environment. It allows for more natural light to fill the space, which promotes happiness and productivity. For the exterior cleaning of your windows, we first recommend removing all of the screens. In a spray bottle, combine some dish soap, white vinegar, and water. Then, spray away built-up dirt or grime on the screens. Rinse well after cleaning, and allow the screens to dry outside before placing them back on the windows. Afterward, make sure to give the windows a generous lather of soap and a good scrub to loosen the dirt before rinsing well. For interior window cleaning, try using a window cleaner spray to keep things less messy.

Replace your HVAC filters

In order to ensure the best air quality in your home, as well as increase the longevity of your HVAC system, it’s recommended to replace your HVAC’s air filter every three months. You may consider replacing the filter more frequently depending on the environment of the home, like if there are pets or people with allergy sensitivities present.

Service your air conditioning unit

If your home has an air conditioning unit, we suggest prepping for the warmer months ahead by getting your A.C. unit serviced. While you’re at it, make sure to check your home’s ductwork and vents to ensure there are no blockages. This is especially important if you have recently had work done on your home.

Inspect the exterior of your home for damage

The exterior of your home can often take a beating during the stormy winter season. We recommend taking a walk around the perimeter of your home to look out for the following:

  • Inspect the roof for any loose or missing shingles, and holes caused by fallen branches or natural aging.

  • Take a look at your gutters to make sure they are free of debris.

  • Wipe down your home’s siding with mild soap if there are any dirt or moss stains.

  • Inspect the exterior for any signs of siding that have been blown off or damaged by winds.

  • Check to make sure your windows have not shifted in their frames.

Touch up exterior paint

Doing some paint touch-ups is a great task to take on after the winter storms have passed. Take a look around the outside of your home for some spots that need some love. If you do not have the correct paint color on hand, your local hardware store can help you match paint colors.

Spruce up outdoor spaces

Prepare for grilling season and eating outdoors by taking care of the following:

  • Get rid of the debris left over from the wind and rain.

  • Trim back any shrubs or trees so they can have a fresh start.

  • Get rid of dead grass, add a fresh layer of topsoil, and reseed the area so grass can start to grow again.

  • Clean patios, decks, and balconies.

Declutter your home and garage

Spring cleaning means it’s time to declutter and get rid of those items no longer needed. We’re believers that every room deserves a Spring clean, but are especially big advocates of a reorganized pantry and storage closet. Did someone say “label maker”?
