To Remodel or to Move?
For most of us, life looks really different than it did before March 2020. I understand. When the initial stay-at-home order was issued in March, we had just started a major kitchen remodel and had just completed the demo phase. Half of our main floor was taped off with sheets of plastic. Not awesome. Needless to say, it was a total zoo. What was normally our home office had already been converted to a make-shift kitchen/dining room, and every other room was occupied or off limits. So at the same time we were told to stay home from work and school, we had to get even more creative with our space. My husband and I hauled an old desk into our bedroom and we took turns working there and at the living room couch, the kids each holed up in their bedrooms for school, and we made it work. But it was FAR from ideal. Oh, did I mention that we were washing dishes in the bathtub? I digress.
Obviously this was a temporary problem for us, but I understand that for SO MANY people, this new reality comes with the need for something different in our homes. The question is… should you remodel to create that space, or move? Here are a few things to consider if you’re asking yourself that question:
What do you need in a home that you don’t currently have?
How much do you love your current home (despite its shortcomings)? If you have a strong emotional attachment to your home, you might be more inclined to explore a remodel or addition.
How much do you love your neighbors, neighborhood, proximity to the places you regularly go? Moving can be a pro or a con, depending on how connected you currently are to your location.
How do you feel about living through construction? For some DIY’ers, this is not a problem. For others, it would be a nightmare. Where do you fall on the spectrum?
Have you researched the remodel costs? When you add that to your current home value, how does it compare to the cost of your ideal home?
